Spring Clearing – Hallway

As part of Spring Clearing Week 2022, I will guide you through decluttering and cleaning the main areas of your house.

Today I am going to talk about the Hallway.

To declutter and clean your hallway, begin by removing everything that is not furniture or fixed to the wall. Empty any cabinets and shelves and take clothes off the hangers. I suggest using plastic boxes to store the content of your hallway. This ensures that it’s easy to put stuff in and take it out and will aid in sorting.

Once you have emptied the hallway, whip down everything thoroughly, mop and hoover the floor and go into all the nooks and crannies to ensure you have cleaned everything from top to bottom.

While you wait for the surfaces to dry, go through your hallway’s content and sort into what to keep and what to donate or recycle. Afterwards, check whether any shoes or coats need cleaning. Do this immediately if you can, or put it on a pile to take to the dry cleaners. Make sure anything that does not belong in the hallway goes to its rightful place.

You can do several things with items you no longer wish to keep.

  • Donate to a charity shop
  • Advertise on Freecycle
  • Give furniture to someone who has just moved house and needs furniture. Perhaps a student or anyone else on a low income. Some of the councils in London collect furniture and give it to needy families.
  • Sell on Gumtree or eBay.
  • Bring to a recycling centre, but only if broken.
