Who are the Minimalists?
Introduction – Who are the Minimalists?
Since around 2019, I’ve been on the minimalist journey. There have been several articles on this blog dealing with Minimalism. Most recently, I have debunked the top misconceptions about Minimalism.
I am not alone in my minimalism journey. There are thousands of people out there who practice Minimalism in their everyday life. Minimalists come from all walks of life.
Below, I want to introduce you to The Minimalists, two young American men known within minimalist circles and beyond.
Have you ever heard of the minimalists? Want to find out who they are and what their message is? Read on to find out.
Who are the Minimalists?
The Minimalists are a duo of two American friends, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. They are known for promoting Minimalism on their blog, podcast, in films and through speaking tours.
Ryan and Joshua met when they were kids and living in Dayton, Ohio. After leaving school, they both had a successful career in retail. It made them rich but not happy.
In 2009, Joshua lost his mother to cancer, and he saw the breakdown of his marriage. After experiencing personal, professional and financial struggles, Joshua Fields Millburn embarked on a minimalist journey.
By 2010, he had roped in his friend Ryan Nicodemus. Both men decided to let go of the excess in their lives and embrace a simpler, more intentional lifestyle.
They chronicled their experiences and insights through their blog. They eventually added a podcast to their repertoire.
In addition, the two also wrote several books in which they explain in an accessible way what Minimalism means to them and why one should practice it.
Together with fellow minimalist and filmmaker Matt D’Avella, they produced two documentaries for Netflix called Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things (2016) and The Minimalists, Less is Now (2021).
What is the Minimalist’s message?
The Minimalists promote the idea of living with less and focusing on what truly adds value and meaning to one’s life.
They encourage people to declutter their physical possessions, simplify their daily routines, and prioritize experiences and relationships over material possessions.
They believe individuals can find more happiness, fulfilment, and freedom by doing so.
The Minimalists’ message has resonated with many people seeking a way to break free from consumerism, reduce stress, and focus on what truly matters to them.
Their philosophy extends beyond physical possessions and encompasses Minimalism in areas such as finances, relationships, and personal growth.
