National Spring clearing Week 2023, ‘Improve Your Space, Mind and Mood For Better Mental Health’
Intro – What is Spring Clearing Week?
Every year APDO, the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers, runs two campaigns, one in the autumn called National Organising Week (NOW) and the other in the Spring, unimaginatively called Spring Clearing Week.
Spring Clearing Week first started in 2018. This year it is happening from the 20th to the 26th of March, 2023. Its focus is on the decluttering work undertaken by professional organisers in the UK. It allows organisers like me to highlight the difference between a spring clear and a spring clean.
What is this year’s theme?
This year’s Spring Clearing week will emphasise the connection between a clutter-free space and our mental well-being.
APDO aims to educate their members, clients and the public on ways to clear the clutter in their lives to improve their mental and emotional well-being. Decluttering your physical space can have a positive impact on your mental health. A cluttered environment can lead to stress, anxiety, and overwhelm, whereas a tidy and organised house can bring feelings of calm, control, and clarity.
My colleagues and I want to share the tools, including practical advice on clearing and maintaining the physical living and workspace. Clearing your space is a therapeutic and satisfying experience. However, it’s important to remember that you should approach decluttering in a way that feels manageable and sustainable for you rather than becoming a source of stress in itself.
APDO wants to raise awareness of the benefits of decluttering your home on your mental health via the media and partnerships. Clearing your home can improve your emotional well-being by reducing stress and anxiety. However, a cluttered environment can contribute to feelings of overwhelm and disorganisation, which can lead to negative emotions.
Following the pandemic, many people, especially young people, have experienced a decline in their mental health. Improving your physical environment by creating a calm and happy space is one step that can contribute to a healthier mind.
What I plan to do during Spring Clearing week
APDO and individual members have a variety of events planned for their clients. Check out the APDO website to see what is happening in your area.
Personally, I will, for this year’s Spring Clearing week, guide you through decluttering, productivity and mental health in a host of articles and short videos.
