What is minimalism – A quick recap?

The minimalism trend is a design and lifestyle movement that gained popularity in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It is characterised by simplicity, functionality, and the idea that “less is more.” You can apply minimalism to various aspects of life, including art, design, architecture, fashion, and even lifestyle choices.

Here are some key principles and aspects of the minimalism trend:

Simplicity

Minimalism advocates for simplicity in all aspects of life. This includes reducing clutter and eliminating unnecessary elements from design, decor, and personal belongings.

Functionality

Minimalist design often prioritises functionality and practicality. Objects and spaces should serve a purpose and have a clear function.

Clean Lines

Minimalist aesthetics typically feature clean lines and simple shapes. Geometric forms and a focus on basic shapes are common in minimalist design.

Limited Colour Palette

Minimalist colour palettes are often neutral and muted, focusing on colours like white, black, grey, and beige. Doing this creates a sense of calm and order.

Decluttering

Minimalism encourages decluttering one’s living space and removing items that are no longer needed or bring value to one’s life.

Quality over Quantity

Minimalists tend to invest in high-quality, timeless items rather than accumulating a large quantity of disposable possessions.

Mindful Consumption

Minimalism emphasises being mindful of what you consume – material possessions, information, or even food. It encourages thoughtful and intentional choices.

Digital Minimalism

In the age of technology, digital minimalism promotes reducing screen time, decluttering digital devices, and focusing on meaningful online interactions.

Environmental Awareness

Many minimalists are conscious of their environmental impact and strive to reduce waste and live more sustainably.

Freedom and Focus

By simplifying their lives, minimalists aim to free themselves from excess distractions and focus on what truly matters to them, whether personal growth, relationships, or experiences.

It’s important to note that minimalism is a personal choice, and individuals may interpret and practice it in various ways. Some may adopt extreme minimalism with very few possessions, while others may take a more moderate approach that aligns with their values and lifestyle.

The minimalism trend has influenced various fields and continues to evolve, with people finding ways to adapt its principles to suit their needs and preferences. It has resonated with those seeking a more deliberate and mindful approach to living in a fast-paced and consumer-driven world.
