Introduction

In the summer of 2022, I introduced readers to the 30-day minimalism game. In 2026, I am playing it again, and I will take you along on my journey.

Many people, while not desiring to be extreme minimalists, wish to downsize their possessions but often struggle to implement this. The Minimalists developed the 30-Day Minimalism game as a fun, playful way to downsize your possessions. Learn more about them here.

Before taking you on my journey, showing you all the stuff I discarded and analysing how I got on, I will briefly recap for those around in 2022 and introduce the Minimalism game to all you newbies. If you want to read the original article, click here.

How the Game Works

The rules of the game are intentionally simple:

  • Start on day one by removing one item from your home.
  • Increase the number each day so that the day number matches the number of items you declutter.
  • Continue for 30 days without skipping days.

Document or share your progress if you choose, often on social media, to stay motivated.

Items can range from clothes and books to old paperwork, digital files, kitchen gadgets, and even apps on your phone. The game’s flexibility makes it accessible to people with diverse lifestyles and living situations.

Why the Game Is So Effective

One of the biggest obstacles to decluttering is feeling overwhelmed. When faced with an entire home full of belongings, it can be hard to know where to start. The 30-Day Minimalism Game removes this barrier by breaking the process into manageable daily tasks.

Early days are easy and build momentum. Later days become more challenging, forcing you to think critically about what you truly need and use. This gradual increase in difficulty mirrors the mental shift that minimalism requires, moving from obvious clutter to more emotionally attached possessions.

Additionally, the game introduces a sense of accountability and play. Treating decluttering as a challenge rather than a chore makes the process more engaging and sustainable.

Benefits of the 30-Day Minimalism Game

There are benefits to the 30-Day Minimalism Game. I will outline four of these below:

A Clutter-Free Environment

The most visible benefit is a cleaner, more organised living space. Removing excess items creates room to breathe, both physically and mentally. Many participants report that their homes feel lighter and more peaceful after completing the challenge.

Improved Decision-Making Skills

Each item you remove requires a decision. Over time, you become faster and more confident in identifying what serves you and what does not. This skill often carries over into other areas of life, such as spending habits and time management.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Clutter has been linked to increased stress levels. By intentionally reducing possessions, many people experience a sense of calm and control. The daily practice of letting go can also be emotionally freeing.

Greater Appreciation for What You Keep

Minimalism is not about loss; it is about clarity. As unnecessary items leave your life, the things you choose to keep stand out more. You may find yourself appreciating your favourite belongings more deeply.

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

As the days progress, the game becomes more demanding. Finding thirty items on the last day can feel intimidating. To overcome this, participants often expand their definition of items to include:

  • Old emails or digital photos
  • Expired pantry items
  • Duplicate tools or accessories
  • Unused subscriptions or memberships

Emotional attachment can also be a hurdle. When you encounter sentimental items, it helps to ask questions such as: Does this support the life I want to live now? Or would I notice if this were gone?

Tips for Success

  • Start early each day to avoid last-minute stress.
  • Keep a donation box handy, so items have a clear destination.
  • Invite a friend or partner to join you for accountability.
  • Be honest with yourself about what you actually use and need.
  • Focus on progress, not perfection.

Beyond the 30 Days

Completing the 30-Day Minimalism Game often sparks long-term change. Many participants continue decluttering beyond the challenge or adopt minimalist habits such as mindful shopping, capsule wardrobes, and simplified schedules.

More importantly, the game shifts your mindset. Instead of asking, What else can I add? You begin to ask, What can I remove to make life better?

How did I get on?

As stated above, this is my second time playing the game. I have been practising minimalism since around 2018 and already live a minimalist lifestyle. I therefore found it impossible to finish the game. Did I fail? Not exactly, because the mission of the game is not simply to complete it, but to declutter and remove items from one’s house. I certainly did this.

Conclusion

The 30-Day Minimalism Game is more than a decluttering exercise—it is an invitation to live with intention. By committing to small daily actions, you create space for what truly matters. Whether your goal is a cleaner home, a calmer mind, or a more meaningful lifestyle, this simple game can be a powerful first step toward lasting minimalism.
