Spring Clearing – Kitchen

Cluttered Kitchen

Yesterday we talked about decluttering and cleaning your bathroom. Today we will talk about spring clearing the kitchen, another room everyone has in their home.

In a similar vein to the bathroom, I suggest taking everything out to allow you to give all the cabinets, nocks, and crannies a good wipe-down.

Afterwards, go through your food supplies and check that all jars, tins and packets are still in date range. Anything out of date, throw away or recycle. Also, take aside duplicates of household items. After all, how many spatulas does a single household need?

When putting appliances and food back, think about what you use daily and only keep these items on countertops. You should store everything else away in cupboards. A clean kitchen adds zen to your house and life and reduces stress.

Store rarely-used pieces of crockery nearer the top of your kitchen shelves and frequently items nearer the bottom for ease of reach.

When storing food, look at the sell-by dates and put items going out of date in the following months towards the front of your cabinet. This way, you ensure that you eat everything before it expires. Likewise, be sure to put anything you buy in the future towards the back of your cupboard.

Now that you have cleaned your kitchen and it’s looking calm and sparkly, what do you do with the giant pile of discarded items?

Put anything broken or outdated in the recycling bin or rubbish.

You can donate old cutlery and crockery to a charity shop that sells them and raises money for a good cause. Give it to someone who is just moving into their first own flat. They will be thankful for the free stuff as it saves money. Moving is expensive.

Donate unwanted but in-date food items to a food bank so that someone else can eat it

Some councils collect larger and still working kitchen appliances and give them to low-income families.

If you have a lot of food that needs to be eaten quickly, why not have a dinner party and learn to cook something new with all those tins you never used?
